Personal Safety

Back when I was going to school in the Philippines, many many years ago I go to school at night. It was my choice to do it at night because I was too busy doing other extra curricular activities for a community organization. I have no regrets because I am not a morning person, so the night classes are great for me. But back then, I wasn't really scared of going home alone because I am used to the area, plus I always carry a mace. But I remembered back when I was living with my sister a couple of years ago here in the US, I went to an Asian Grocery to buy something, cannot remember what was it, but the store was quite far from the apartment. I don't want to take the bus because it will take me forever just to wait for the bus to arrived. So I decided to take a walk. It seems to me that time that I will be doing myself a favor since I will be getting a good exercise. So I got to the grocery store just fine and on my way from the grocery store I walked the same route to go home. About halfway, I noticed that there's a couple of people who are walking too which was good because I have never walk that far before, alone. And you know when you get that feeling like somebody is trying to follow you? Well, for some reason there was a car that was driving slow and I keep looking back to see what was going on. I told myself, maybe the guy was just cruising around trying to enjoy the car ride, but I went ahead and walk faster because I was getting scared. And guess what the guy drove faster. The faster I walk the faster he drove.

Okay, so maybe he was fascinated by me. I was still trying to think of something positive even though somebody was following me. When I got close to where we lived, I decided to change route just to let the guy know I am close to my house. Hoping he will leave me alone. The car vanished for a while and then when I turned to the next road, there he was! Now, I was really scared. He drove closer to where I was walking and he said something, which I didn't understand because I was so scared. And because of that I screamed at him and told him to leave me alone. Good thing after I screamed at him he left.

It was definitely a scary walk for me. And after that incident, I never walk going to that Asian store again. It could have been handy if I have a mace pepper spray that time.

Last semester my husband bought me some pepper spray and he always tells me to keep in handy because there are times that I parked a little farther from the school building. So having some extra protection is always good.
