Ever wonder why your toddler tries to open the same locked cabinet day after day? Or why, when you see her heading for the floor lamp and say "no, honey, that's dangerous" she starts running in a desperate attempt to get there before you do?The explanation is simple: One year olds are fueled by a great amount of curiosity about the world around them. Exploring helps them learn and feed their brain development. Discovering new things also helps your child feel in control, which boosts her/his confidence. Chances are your child is already blazing her/his own trails. But there's plenty you can do to make it more fun - and educational.
Follow his/her lead.
Toddlers investigate things at their own pace and according to their individual interests. Bay many 1 year old like to dawdle for good reason. "They are trying to make sense of things, so they take their time examining them." Let you child discover things on his own and learn new skills. And don't rush him/her.
Stimulate the senses.
Toddler's explore with their whole body. Take advantage of this by utilizing your child's sense of touch, which is specially important at this age. Point out and identify various textures. Looks for ways to stimulate her/his other senses too. Also give your child a chance to get hands on with artwork. Have her mash a lump of modeling clay or explore texture with finger paint.
Go on adventure together.
Taking your little explorer outdoor is one of the best things you can do. A park or hiking trails will sparkle a lot of curiosity.
Let her/him explore (safely) at home and give him a chance to people watch.
