...don't leave home without it

Who's calling the shots for your child when you are on the road? Maybe you travel for business and rely on family or a sitter for childcare. Perhaps your child is headed off to a sports competition or a school trip or maybe your ex is taking the kids on a vacation out of the country. Savvy parents prep for the travel in case of an emergency-no matter who is traveling, parent or child, by filling out medical authorizations, insurance information and custodial authority forms.

Here are some of the following tips that you can do for optimum peace of mind.
  • Keep a list of contact information with your child's caretaker, including names and phone numbers of doctors, neighbors and nearby relatives, as well as list of medications or allergies.
  • For overnight caretakers, include a permission slip, stating that the caretaker can present the child to any license dentist, physician or hospital for emergency care.
  • If you child is traveling away from home with another adult, creating a specific letter of permission identifying the caretaker, as well as dates and places of travel. Airlines may require additional documentation, especially for international travel. Plan on having your permission notarized.
